What to see at Canberra: Australia's capital city

I decided to write about Australia in particular its capital city, Canberra which I visited three years ago, and I will share it with you.

Institutions of National Significance

Canberra is the capital of Australia and it is where the seat of the government is located. The seat of the government of Australia is where the Parliament House is located, High Court of Australia and government agencies and departments. It is also the location of many social and cultural institutions of national significance, such as the Australian War Memorial, National Gallery of Australia, National Museum of Australia and the National Library of Australia.

I was able to go inside and listen to deliberation at Parliament House -- it is where the Parliameny of Australia meet. Australia’s government is based on a popularly elected parliament with two chambers: the House of Representatives and the Senate. Ministers appointed from these chambers conduct executive government, and policy decisions are made in Cabinet meetings. Cabinet discussions are not disclosed and ministers are bound by the principle of Cabinet solidarity. Queen Elizabeth II of UK is also formally the country's Queen, and the Queen appoints a Governor-General (on the advice of the elected Australian Government) to represent her majesty too.

I also went inside the National Museum of Australia and I came to appreciate their legacy as a Commonwealth Nation with the aborigines as a part of it and the Great Britain too.

Visitors to the Tower can see the city unfold from the enclosed viewing gallery or the two open viewing platforms. There is a kiosk with souvenirs, coffee lounge, and Canberra's only revolving restaurant.

The Australian National University is considered the main University in Australia is known for research and excellent academic pursuits.

The National Zoo is ten minutes away from the place I stayed so I went there twice. This is Australia's home of the wild, so I was expecting to see lots of animals, and yes, I saw them all. The tigons and the ligers, cross breeding of tigers and lions. Tigon is a hybrid between a male tiger and female ligon, while it is opposite for the liger. The liger hybrid is more common too. They are also available for viewing but I haven't got a picture of it. There is of course the koala, sharks, and the kangaroo, plus the dingo -- their dog which is unique to Australia. I wasn't able to get a picture of Tasmanian devil because it is sleeping at that time too.

Great hub Maita and I luv the pics! I've never been to Australia but am hoping to visit one day - I have relatives in Perth. Looks like you had a great time. It must have been great being able to sit in on a deliberation and I've always wanted to see a dingo up close (instead of on tv) - thanks for taking us there with you :-) Pattie

Excellent hub Maita, Canberra was my hometown and you certainly got it covered in your hub, I couldn't have put it better myself. Yes its a great little city, our Nation's capital, very clean, pristine, and most people say a great place to raise kids.

I can see you love to travel, that is fantastic and thank you for sharing your journeys, I look forward to reading more.

Warm Hugs Billie

Loved this one, Maita. What great pics! I have an aunt that lives in Melbourne who asked me if I want to visit and I'm still on the fence about it. I really have too much going on here with trying to find a literary agent. But if I sell my novel, I'll be able to afford to go after wards :D We'll see...

Merry Christmas, Maita!

Look at you in Canberra!

Canberra is the butt of many jokes in Australia - being the only 'manufactured' city and the location of too many politicians, but people who live there say that it's the most liveable of Australian capitals and has a proper 4 seasons (unlike Sydney, which pretty much has summer and mild winter with a feint transition between).

prettydarkhorse profile image

prettydarkhorse Hub Author 2 years ago

hi audrevea, Canberra for me is pristine and a very nice place like the rest of Australia, Thank you for your information about the seasons also,

I wish to visit other places in australia too,

thank you, Maita

Great information, prettydarkhorse. I'm in Canberra at the moment and absolutely love it!

To all coeliac consumers out there, please be careful at ZEFFIRELLI - Canberra's No.1 Italian Restaurant! I have posted my concerns on my hub http://hubpages.com/profile/infonolan
